So, school's officially out, and parents may find themselves trying to avoid that first dreaded, "I'm bored," or looking for ways to keep the kids a little more screen-free and a little less couch-bound. Luckily, we live in an amazing city for free family fun!

🦁 Henry Vilas Zoo

702 S. Randall Ave. | Daily 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

One of only a few free, accredited zoos in the country. Six hundred fifty animals, a playground, and Vilas Park next door for picnics. Admission is free every day, though donations are welcome.

🌿 Nature: Arboretum & Olbrich Gardens

UW Arboretum: Daily 4 a.m. – 10 p.m. | Olbrich: Free grounds daily; conservatory free Wed & Sat 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The Arboretum puts 1,200 acres and 20+ miles of trails through prairies, marshes, and woodlands right in the heart of the city! Olbrich adds 16 acres of gardens, the only Thai Pavilion in the continental U.S., and a free Tuesday night concert series all summer more on that below). Again, donations appreciated, but never required.

🌊 Splash Pads

Cypress, Elver, Reindahl, & Rennebohm Parks | Daily, Memorial Day–Labor Day, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Four free water playgrounds in the city, with more in Middleton, Fitchburg, and Sun Prairie. Free, keeps kids and adults alike cool, exhausting in the best way, and practically guaranteed to produce a nap on the drive home (for safety purposes, that part's just for the kids).

🏛️ History, Art & Culture

Capitol: Tours Mon–Sat 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. | MMoCA: Free Wed–Sun | Veterans Museum: Free daily Mon-Sat

Three of Madison's best indoor destinations are completely free. Tour the State Capitol Rotunda and sixth-floor observation deck. Drop into the Veterans Museum for Civil War–to-present military history. Hit MMoCA on State Street any Wednesday–Sunday for galleries and drop-in artmaking at the Art Lab for kids. The Governor's Mansion also opens for free tours mid-June through August when you register online.

📚 Madison Public Library: WE READ Summer Reading

Nine locations | madpl.org/weread

WE READ runs all summer with illustrated maps, collectible badges, a writing contest (cash prizes, anthology publication), storytimes, and play spaces at every branch. It's free, it fights the summer slump, and kids actually love it.

🎡 Programs That Come to You: Mobile Madison

Mobile Madison: Parks citywide, evenings | mscr.org

Mobile Madison loads up vans and rolls free activities (pottery, play programs, the DNR Fishmobile, Children's Museum Roadshow) to neighborhood parks all summer, prioritizing areas with limited resources. Check out MSCR's site for the rotating schedule and to see where they stop next!

🎵 Free Music & Movies All Summer

Various venues and parks

Madison basically runs on free outdoor entertainment. Concerts on the Square (Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, six Wednesday evenings on the Capitol lawn), Concerts on the Rooftop at Monona Terrace is free Thursday nights (reserve at Eventbrite), and the Olbrich After Hours Series on Tuesday evenings 6-9p.m. through August 11 (advanced tickets required) keep the music going all season. If your little one is more of a Roger Ebert in-the-making, the Sina Davis Movies in the Park series brings free family film nights to parks across Madison from June through October.

🏄 Mad-City Ski Team at Law Park

Most Sundays, Memorial Day–Labor Day | Junior show 5 p.m.; main show 6 p.m.

Eleven-time national champion water skiers perform pyramids, barefoot skiing, and jump sequences on Lake Monona for free every Sunday. Bring chairs, sit close if you want the chance to get splashed.
