Why June Is the Perfect Time to Start Your Real Estate Career
Most people experience real estate from one angle: the nerve-wracking, exhilarating, life-changing experience of buying or selling a home. But there's another perspective entirely, one that doesn't get nearly enough attention during National Homeownership Month.
It belongs to the agent. The sales partner. The professional sitting across the table who spent weeks (or months or years) building trust, navigating details, and guiding someone through one of the most significant financial decisions of their life. That work is challenging, dynamic, rewarding, and wide open to the right people.
If you've ever watched a transaction unfold and thought "I could do that," you might be more right than you know! June is a great time to find out, and here's what getting started looks like in Wisconsin.
Getting Your Wisconsin Real Estate License in 2026
The path to licensure is actually more straightforward than most people expect. According to the Wisconsin REALTORS® Association, here are the steps:
- Complete 72 hours of approved pre-licensing education. Courses are available online or in-person through accredited providers, and many students finish in as little as two weeks if they go full-time, or spread it over a couple of months at their own pace.
- Pass the salesperson exam through Pearson VUE. The exam includes a National section (85 questions) and a Wisconsin-specific State section (55 questions), with a passing scaled score of 75 on each. The exam fee is $65.
- Submit your application to the DSPS. Apply online through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) licensing system, along with your supporting documents and a $75 license fee.
- Affiliate with a licensed Wisconsin broker and start building your business.
Basic eligibility requirements are minimal: you must be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Who Makes a Great Real Estate Agent?
Real estate rewards people who are already good at working with people. Here are a few backgrounds that translate naturally:
Sales & Customer Service Professionals If you've spent years in retail, B2B sales, hospitality, insurance, finance, or any customer-facing role, you already know how to build trust, handle objections, and close. Real estate is relationship-driven at its core. That skill set is a great head start.
Teachers & Educators Summer has officially arrived, and real estate is one of the few professional fields where you can build meaningful income during a break without abandoning your classroom career. Many educators discover that their patience, communication skills, and ability to explain complex concepts make them exceptional agents. Some eventually transition full-time. Others find it the perfect complement.
Military & Veterans Discipline, mission focus, adaptability, and the ability to perform under pressure. Sound familiar? Veterans bring exactly the kind of character the best real estate professionals are built on. The structure of real estate (goal-setting, systems, execution) mirrors a lot of what the military already trained you to do. And the independence of running your own business is a natural fit for those who've led teams and owned outcomes.
This Month, Take the First Step
National Homeownership Month is a reminder of what's at stake in every transaction: for the people buying and selling, yes, but also for the professionals guiding them through one of the biggest decisions of their lives. That's a meaningful career.
If you've been sitting on the idea, consider this your nudge. The licensing process in Wisconsin is accessible, the market is active, and the right team can make the difference between a slow start and a strong one.
