Let’s be real: in Wisconsin, "Spring" is sometimes more of a suggestion than an actual season. If you’re looking out the window right now at yet another dusting of white, don't let the snow still flying fool you, spring is right around the corner (no matter what that buzzkill 10-day forecast says!)

Before you know it, we’ll be trading our insulated puffer coats for light jackets and spending our Saturdays at the Farmers' Market instead of shoveling the driveway.

Because of that fresh start feeling, spring is also officially the kickoff for moving season. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, roughly 10% to 12% of Americans move every year, with the vast majority of those trucks hitting the road between April and September. If that group includes you, and you’re upgrading to a bigger backyard for summer BBQs or downsizing to a sleek condo near the Capitol, the Holt Real Estate Team is here to make sure your transition is smoother than a fresh scoop of Chocolate Shoppe ice cream.

Your 6-Step Guide to a Stress-Free Move:

1. Create a Realistic Timeline & Budget: A detailed moving checklist and a clear budget are your new best friends. Start planning at least 6 weeks out. This is where you’ll decide if you’re hiring professionals or rallying friends, how much to allocate for packing supplies, and what your timeline looks like for each step.

2. Declutter Ruthlessly: Don’t move things you don’t need! Use the spring season as an excuse for a major purge. Group items to sell, donate, and discard. Bonus: less to pack means lower moving costs (or lower chance of taking up too much of your friends' and family's time!)

3. Vet and Book Your Movers Early: The spring and summer moving rush is real. As soon as you have your moving date, start getting quotes from reputable moving companies. Check reviews, verify licenses and insurance, and get a clear understanding of their pricing structure.

4. Pack Strategically & Label EVERYTHING: Don’t just throw things in boxes. Use quality packing materials (you can often find free boxes from local businesses). Pack room by room, label each box clearly on multiple sides with its contents and destination room, and number your boxes. Create an "Open First" box with essentials.

  • Find More Info: For packing tips, including how to wrap fragile items, visit The Spruce: How to Pack for a Move.

5. Update Your Address & Utilities: This is a critical step that’s easy to overlook. At least two weeks before you move, file a change of address with USPS. Then, schedule the transfer or shut-off of utilities (electric, gas, water, internet, trash) for both your old and new homes.

  • Find More Info: Visit the official USPS website for your change of address: USPS Change of Address. For Madison-specific utility information, check the City of Madison website: Madison Utilities.

6. Prepare Your New Home for Arrival: Before the moving truck unloads, if possible, get into your new home to clean, perhaps paint, and map out where your large furniture will go. This pre-work will make move-in day significantly more efficient and less overwhelming.

  • Find More Info: Need help with home projects? Check out local South-Central Wisconsin service providers on our very own Vendor List or platforms like Thumbtack: Thumbtack Madison Services.

Moving is a journey, and like any journey, it has its challenges. But with a solid plan, the right resources, and a bit of spring-infused energy, you can make your move a successful and even enjoyable experience.
